Delayed NYC snow cleanup

New York (CNN) -- Four days after a monster blizzard blanketed much of the northeastern United States, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he will investigate whether sanitation workers intentionally delayed cleanup efforts over frustrations regarding citywide budget cuts.

"It would be an outrage if it took place," Bloomberg said Thursday, stressing that his administration's primary focus is clearing streets in the city's outer boroughs. Some neighborhoods remained snowbound for days after the storm.
Rumors swirled across New York on Thursday that sanitation officers ordered rank-and-file workers to slow down cleanup efforts in retaliation for the city's belt-tightening measures.

City Councilman Dan Halloran said three sanitation workers and two Department of Transportation supervisors came to his office saying their supervisors ordered the slowdown, telling workers that "the mayor will see how much he needs us" and that "there will be plenty of overtime."

Bloomberg said budget cuts had not yet taken effect but defended them, saying, "the state is facing a budget deficit that's going to filter down to us."

The slow clean-up effort hampered morning commuters, delayed first responders and even prevented aircraft service personnel from reaching airports where 29 international flights were stuck on the tarmac for more than three hours, officials said.

The head of New York's sanitation workers' union earlier blamed harsh winds and budget cuts as reasons for the slow response.

"We were 400 people short," said Harry Nespoli, president of the Uniformed Sanitationmen's Association. "There are certain services that should not be affected. The people pay taxes for it."

Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty said he had not seen evidence of a worker protest.

New Years Tips and Dj CountDowns

New Years Tips and Dj CountDowns: "

It’s become an annual tradition that Dj TechTools provides all of our readers with Tips and Tools for up coming New Years Eve gigs. This year we continue that tradition with another set of helpful tricks and tips that will help make your night go smoothly. Continue reading after the fold for Mp3 count downs, drops, tips from the pro’s and more.

KEEP IT FUN

The biggest mistake I see djs make is planning a set based on normal circumstances. New Years is a very unique night of djing that certainly requires special consideration when planning your evening. Here are important things to look out for:
  • People start early, so move the time line up and get the dance floor started earlier than usual.
  • Due to the copious amount of drinking, expectations for sing-along tracks seem to go higher. Be ready with some feel good jams that your audience will absolutely know.
  • Big nights usually bring out the “amateurs”, “bridge and tunnel” or whatever you want to call non-regular party folk. These crowds will not have an subtle appreciation for your obscure track selection and deft mixing skills so keep it fun and play great songs- this is one night where classic hits almost always go over well.
  • Don’t expect them to stick around all night. NYE usually involves a lot of party jumping especially pre and post ball drop so do your best to keep the energy up during that critical period or you might lose the crowd.

TIPS FROM THE PROS

We asked Charles FeelGood, a professional dj for over 20 years, and the man behind our new LA store for some timeless NYE tips. This is what he had to say:
I would have to say that one of the most important aspects of my night as a Dj on NYE is of course the countdown. One thing I learned a long time ago, is that it’s probably a good idea to start giving the crowd a heads up at least two hours before midnight. Start around 10pm,11pm,11:30pm,11:45pm and so on until the big one.
My first big New Years was in Washington DC doing the countdown, and I made no announcements prior to midnight and when my time came, no one was paying attention and midnight came and went without a pop – lesson learned!

NEW YEARS EVE MUSIC AND COUNT DOWNS

Be sure to plan out what happens at midnight- and talk to your promoter or the club owner to figure out if they have something specific in mind. Are you counting down over top of music? Is there a visual countdown that you should coordinate with? It’s really helpful to have a few pre-mixed tracks and countdowns in your bag to make the night go smoothly. We’re conveniently rated them based on how cheesy they are. New Year’s can get pretty cheesy, but sometimes its fun to just embrace it.

If your playing videos this weekend the sequence above is available in full 720P - download the NYE video drop here
there is another nice countdown video (without music) that you can grab here.

The Daily Word -SERENITY - Friday, December 24, 2010: "

In the sacred silence I find peace.

The Gospel of Luke tells the story of the baby Jesus, born and laid in a lowly manger. The stars stood still over the spot; a holy hush filled the air. At the moment of birth, the manger became a sacred place.
There is a sacred place within me that I discover whenever I behold the Christ of my being. I am made new each time I enter into the wonder of my creation as a beloved child of God. My thoughts are still and a sacred silence fills me. I am enfolded in the enduring love of the Creator. I am at peace.
I may enter my sacred place when I am alone or with dear ones. I may carry my sacred place to a quiet room or to a candlelit church. In the sacred silence, I find peace.
This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.--Luke 2:12

The Daily Word -GUIDANCE - Wednesday, December 29, 2010:

I follow where Spirit leads me.

The story of the Wise Men reminds me of the power of divine wisdom. Although I may not see a visible light in the night sky to guide my way as they did, I experience divine light within me each day, guiding my path and filling my soul.

Divine light illumines me, and through this light, I am assured of peace and success along my life's journey. Just as the Wise Men followed the star to the Christ child, I follow my star--my guiding light--to a greater spiritual awakening. I am assured that with divine light to guide me, my path is clear, my journey is blessed and I am at peace.

As I open my mind and heart to the wisdom of Spirit, I am led along a path of magnificence, joy and unending good.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem.--Matthew 2:1

The Daily Word - PROSPERITY - Tuesday, December 28, 2010:
My world is filled with divine abundance and unlimited potential.

The keys to the kingdom are available to us all. These are not hollow words; they are truth. Life is meant to be lived abundantly. Rather than focusing on lack, I acknowledge the ways in which I am blessed.

My relationships, my body, my bank account--all are healthy and strong. With each breath, I take in the richness of life, the richness of Spirit. My chest swells with love, my heart fills with gratitude and I see God's blessings. This is my spiritual inheritance. Abiding in God's love, I experience the kingdom--the sufficiency of all things and the abundance of every good.

Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you. --Isaiah 60:5

The Dailt Word - WORLD PEACE - Monday, December 27, 2010: "

I am inspired to right action for the good of all.

The Christ within is God individualized in each one of us, the divinity that is our pattern for perfection. Jesus achieved perfection in his life, declared it also possible for everyone, and lived as an example for us to follow.

With the Christ Spirit as my inspiration and guidance, I am called to be a peacemaker. I maintain a peaceful perspective in my own mind and body through my prayers, my meditation and by loving and caring for myself. At peace within, I am a presence of peace.

I realize my oneness with and my love and respect for all of God's children. I acknowledge our commonality, appreciate our diversity and celebrate our shared divinity. Through the Christ within, I am inspired to right action for the good of all people.

The God of peace be with all of you.--Romans 15:33

Christ in me is the hope of glory.

On this Christmas morning, what can I offer the reborn Spirit of Christ within me? I can offer eyes that look for the goodness of God in all people. I can offer hands ready to serve in small and large ways. I can offer feet that will walk in the path of peace and light.

On this Christmas morning, I offer the Christ Spirit within me a mind willing to believe in eternal possibilities. I offer a voice that sings of faith, joy, love and oneness. I offer my cooperation in establishing the kingdom of heaven here on earth.

Celebrating today the birth of Jesus, I find in my heart a new willingness to believe that I can do my part in making Christmas not just one day in the year, but a way of living life.

Know the love of Christ ... so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.--Ephesians 3:19

The Daily Word - LET GO, LET GOD - Thursday, December 23, 2010: "

I relax, release and place my faith in God.

Sometimes I need a reminder that God is my help in every need. When I feel tense, concerned or fatigued by circumstances, it is a cue to change course. Perhaps I have been feeling I must handle everything immediately and by myself. From the depths of my being, I am nudged toward the awareness that there is a more peaceful path. My soul never forgets that I am one with Spirit.

As I relax, release and place my faith in God, I am directed to a wellspring of inner peace. I invite my mind to become still, my breathing to slow, my striving to cease. After a few moments of letting go and letting God, I welcome the flow of renewed energy and the reassurance that God is with me. With gratitude, I open to new ideas, restored confidence and unlimited resources.

Have faith in God.--Mark 11:22

BOB MARLEY: LAST RECORDED PERFORMANCE TO BE RELEASED

BOB MARLEY: LAST RECORDED PERFORMANCE TO BE RELEASED:

Bob Marley, who is easily one of reggae’s most successful and influential musicians, has left behind a legacy that still inspires artists today. With countless critically acclaimed albums and several prestigious awards, he continues to have an impact on our lives. Now we’ll be able to listen to the Jamaican's last recorded performance on an upcoming live album due out early next year.
This will be the sixth official live album by Bob Marley and The Wailers, and is entitled Live Forever. The album has two CD’s worth of material, and features some of Bob Marley’s greatest hits like “Jamming”, “Redemption Song”, and “No Woman, No Cry”.

The material was recorded 30 years ago at a show on September 23rd, 1980 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania just after writing the hit album Uprising, which would turn out to be the last studio album Bob Marley released during his life. The record is planned to be available for purchase on the first of February.

“Bob’s music has always conveyed a message of hope, unity and love,” says Rita Marley. “It has brought countless people together as it did that night 30 years ago in Pittsburgh. To hear that music today and to be able to share it with a new generation shows that Bob is as relevant today as he was 30 years ago.”

Jermaine Jackson Falls Victim to Foreclosure

Jermaine Jackson Falls Victim to Foreclosure: "

First the Fatboys break-up, and now this.

TMZ is reporting that Jermaine Jackson, older brother of the late, legendary Michael Jackson, may bring in 2011 homeless.

Jackson's 5 bedroom, 6 bathroom Calabasas home is set to be sold for a minimum bid of $2,184,233 January 21st on the steps of a Pomona, Calif., courthouse. After leasing the home for just under 18 months, pursuant to California law, he has 60 days from the time of foreclosure to vacate.

This is bad news for the former Jackson 5 member, who has been receiving negative media attention for failing to pay nearly $100,000 in back child support. In September, Jackson asked a judge to reduce his $3,000 a month payments to $215 per month, because he was broke and unemployed.

How a grown man can father all these children and expect his mother to support them is beyond me, but that is exactly what Jermaine and his child's mother have been doing.

Jackson, best known post–Jackson 5 fame for his love ballad duet with Whitney Houston, 'If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful,' and his brother, Randy, both have children with the same woman, Alejandra Oaziaza, who along with 4 of her children were recently kicked out of the Jackson family compound in Encino, Calif.

Allegedly, Mama Katherine refused to allow them to remain, after Jermaine's son, Jaafar, attempted to taser Michael's youngest son, Prince Michael II, commonly known as 'Blanket.'

With all the drama, intrigue and mystery swirling around the Jacksons, I think a reality show may just be the answer to all their problems. I'm sure millions would tune in to watch this train wreck.

It's sad to watch this family, who has given us years of quality entertainment and been central to our musical landscape since the '70s, disintegrate before our eyes. From the years of alleged abuse at the hands of family patriarch, Joe Jackson, to the untimely death of their beloved baby boy, Michael, it has been one tragedy after the other. The Jacksons deserve some peace.

Then, Jermaine needs to get a job.

The Daily Word - Protection - Wednesday, December 22, 2010: "

Knowing I am divinely protected, I am at peace.

God guides, supports and protects me as I move through my day. When I face a challenge or uncertainty, I take a moment to look beyond what lies before me. I refrain from pondering all the 'what ifs' and turn my thoughts to God. Through the very act of remembering the presence of God, I realize peace.

As I turn my attention away from the problem, I flip the switch that connects me to the One--a constant, bright, warm protective presence. Love wells up in me. I feel calm and serene. Circumstances come and go, but God's love dwells in me at all times, and in that love, I am safe and secure.

Because you have made the Lord your refuge, the Most High your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you. --Psalm 91:9-10

Creative Structure for a Unforgettable Mix

Creative Structure for a Unforgettable Mix: "

“Fare un cinema” Is an old Italian saying that literally translates to “make a movie”. Think of all your favorite movies. Why do you love them? Aside from all the big budgets and beautiful people, chances are you loved a movie simply because it was- a good story. In this article, we’re going to cover creative structure and how you can apply a very simple formula to your mixes that’ll make them- tell a story. Turning mixes that people will like into mixes people will love…

WHAT IS CREATIVE STRUCTURE?

Music and literature are two of the things that really define us as humans. Songs and stories, wherever they come from, are similar in that, they all have a beginning, middle, and end. This was the simple formula that the Greeks were using in the 3rd century B.C., and what Danny Tenaglia uses today (although he refers to it as the Appetizer, entrée, and dessert). Simply sounding, there are in fact smaller (more complex) categories within these that can be combined in very creative ways, to produce wonder. The two types of creative structure we will be discussing today are musical structure and dramatic structure.

MUSICAL STRUCTURE

As DJs, the knowledge of musical structure is a must; it is the foundation of music mixing. Most songs usually have an intro, hook, verse, chorus, bridge, solo, breakdown, and outro. Let’s first take a look at these elements individually, and then see how musical structure fits into creating a killer mix (you might be thinking the obvious, but just follow me on this one!)
INTRO
  • Usually introduces melody or mood
  • Can sometimes serve to contrast the other main parts
HOOK

  • The catchy part that will generate interest
VERSE
  • Same bit of melody or chords that’s repeated
  • If vocals, the words usually change each time.
CHORUS
  • The catchy part of the song.
  • The part you probably hum in the shower.
  • Repeats but never changes
BRIDGE
  • Serves as contrasting mood to a repetitive verse & chorus
SOLO
  • Part that features a particular instrument
  • Can serve to change the pace of a song
BREAKDOWN
  • All instrumentation is removed except for percussion & vocals
OUTRO
  • The conclusion or end of a song
Now that we’re familiar with the structure of a song, lets examine the subject at hand a little more closely.
When you mix music, you are combining the musical structures of two songs and fading from one song to another; we all know this. Though when creating a mix, you should not only think about the song structure from song to song but also think of the entire mix, as one song.

Your mix should contain all the important parts of a song: A beginning, middle, and end. You dig?

DRAMATIC STRUCTURE

According to the book, Introduction to Media Arts, “It can be said that the purpose of art is to provide pleasure. If so, then it stands to reason that pleasure can be defined as the release from tension. The greater the tension from which the audience is released, the greater the pleasure afforded.
By this philosophy, the climatic dramatic structure of a script [or mix in our case] is specifically arranged to create, build, and eventually release an elevated measure of tension.”

CLASSIC THREE-ACT PARADIGM

The three-act paradigm is a concept used in screenplay, film, and animation. Interestingly enough, I’ve come to find can also be used for music. Let’s have a look, shall we?

ACT I

The Hook - Depending on your genre of music, your hook can be a long intro that builds into something or even just a really captivating song. The more creative you are with this, the more interest you will build in your listeners.
The Exposition – After your hook, this would be the time to establish your style as a DJ. This part sets the “ground work” for your taste in music and your abilities to manipulate your music creatively.
Plot Point 1 – At this stage of the mix, you can either have gradually increased the tempo up to this point, or slowed it down, depending on how you started. This is also the point where you can experiment or change genres all together.
Be careful not to get too crazy here. If you don’t sustain the listener’s interest, they will never make it to the midpoint, which is where you want to get them to!

ACT II

The Midpoint or Point of No Return – If your listener has reached this point, give yourself a pat on the bum; you have intrigued your listener thus far. It’s important to reach the midpoint because by this point, they will feel they have to finish the mix to “See how it ends.”
It starts to be smoothing sailing from here but again, be careful, because if your listener gets to act three and hasn’t had their tension released properly, they’ll hate your mix like they hate a bad movie (Like Rush Hour 3…)

ACT III

The Climax – This is where your prized songs come in. You are in full effect and are probably at a faster tempo then when you started; this is like the peak time at a club. At this point, your listeners are probably dancing their ass of in their bathrobe while getting ready for work. You have released all that tension you had been building up, and your listener has fallen in love. Bravo.
Just remember that before you end your mix, you slow the tempo down to cool them off, and you leave them with a song that makes them feel good. You kind of want them to leave with a sense of accomplishment or that they’re life has become more enriched because of your mix.

Cleary you can see that creative structure is important in creating a good mix but these are just guidelines and aren’t set in stone. Some other things to consider are:

  • Dance to your mix! David Mancuso once said, “A DJ is there to participate. He should have one foot in the booth and the other on the dance floor.” I’m surprised how very few DJs even dance. Before I was a DJ, I was a participant on the dance floor; I never lose sight of that. If your mix is making you shake your booty, you’re on the right track.
  • Think of your mix as a generic soundtrack to everybody’s life. Try to capture your mix in such a way that when the person you gave it to pops it in and plays it, it fits their “movie” perfectly. I know that sounds a little crazy, but try it. You’d be surprised.
  • Don’t be afraid to be daring. Take risks. Make mistakes.
  • Watch your favorite films to see 3AP in action then try to duplicate that experience.
“Here are 2 links to my personal mixes Troy’s Freak Mix 2007 and K-PAXin’ the Potato, which were both created with the information above. I challenge you to spot the various parts of the three-act paradigm and I want you ask yourself, “What was going on in his life when he created this mix?” There is a story in them and I’d love for you to find it… “

The Daily Word - HAPPY HEART - Monday, December 20, 2010

The Daily Word - HAPPY HEART - Monday, December 20, 2010: "

My heart is happy.

I start this day by filling my mind with constructive and optimistic thoughts. As a result, I start this day with a happy disposition, a happy heart.

I remember these words from Scripture: 'Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.' As I do this, I leave no room in my mind or heart for unhappy thoughts or feelings.

As I start my day with a happy heart, my outlook is brighter, my walk is lighter, and my voice is sweeter. Love lights the way before me. My happy heart releases all tension, and I am at ease and at peace in mind and body.

Happy are those who trust in the Lord.--Proverbs 16:20

The Daily Word - TENDERNESS - Friday, December 17, 2010: "

God's love gently heals all.

Just as a child in pain seeks the comforting lap of his mother or father, so I come to God in prayer if I am in need of healing. In the silence, I am reassured that I am God's beloved child, created in the image and likeness of the Divine. Even in dark moments, I am not afraid. I behold the light of the Christ Spirit within me and any fear is dispelled.

Throughout my body--every tissue, every muscle--I feel the healing energy of God. Like a tender touch easing any pain, God's healing love presses into every cell, infusing it with Life. I gratefully accept the love of God and the compassionate care of others, knowing that every loving gesture is a channel for divine healing.

He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds. --Psalm 147:3

Fossil Connected watch concept displays vital info from your Android or BlackBerry handset, looks great doing it: "

Sure, companies haven't had too much success with connected watches -- remember SPOT? But don't lose hope! The Fossil Connected watch concept shows that at least somebody is still trying to bring wrist-based chronometers into the 21st century. This timepiece is designed to pair with your Android or BlackBerry handset via Bluetooth to display weather, caller ID info, text messages, so on and so forth. And unlike a lot of the watches we see in this space, it actually looks pretty damn good. It remains to be seen exactly when these will make it to market (currently the company is hashing out the concept and 'showing them around Silicon Valley,' according to Robert Scoble), but when they do they should sell for around $200. Get a closer look after the break.
